Three Dead as Storms Ravage California

(MENAFN) Multiple fatalities have been confirmed following catastrophic storms that ravaged California on Christmas Day Thursday, unleashing devastating floods, deadly mudslides, and leaving tens of thousands without electricity, media outlets confirm.

Successive atmospheric river systems pummeled the San Francisco Bay Area and Southern California, releasing as much as 11 inches (27 centimeters) of precipitation across sections of Los Angeles County and forcing resident evacuations, media reported.

On Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an emergency declaration for Los Angeles and multiple additional counties as rescue teams conducted water extractions and removed debris blocking roadways.

Authorities in San Diego confirmed a 64-year-old male victim died Wednesday after a tree collapsed onto him.

A 74-year-old man perished in Redding after becoming trapped inside his vehicle amid weekend flooding, according to officials. Additionally, a woman in her seventies was pulled into ocean waters by a massive wave at MacKerricher State Park in Mendocino County, the sheriff's office confirmed.

'Numerous flash flooding events possible'
The US Weather Prediction Center issued warnings stating "Numerous flash flooding events are possible," adding: "Many streams may flood, potentially affecting larger rivers."

Fire-damaged terrain surrounding Los Angeles, including Altadena, experienced mudslides where vegetation decimated by January's wildfires compromised hillsides' water absorption capacity, media reported.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass emphasized precaution during peak travel season, saying: "I am urging all Angelenos to stay safe and be extremely careful on the roads if you absolutely must travel. Please do not take this storm lightly."

Over 100,000 utility customers remained without electricity statewide Thursday evening, while wind velocities in the San Francisco Bay Area surpassed 100 miles per hour (161 kilometers per hour),media reported.

Meteorologists cautioned that incoming precipitation could intensify flooding dangers through Friday.
