Hostage Standoff Continues at California Bank Following Bomb Threat

(MENAFN) A heavily armed police response remained underway after a man allegedly entered a bank in Bakersfield, California, and barricaded himself inside with several people, prompting a prolonged hostage situation.

Authorities said the incident began at a JPMorgan Chase branch located near Chester Avenue and 17th Street in downtown Bakersfield. Police were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving reports of a bomb threat at approximately 1 p.m. local time.

The suspect reportedly remained inside the building with an unknown number of hostages as law enforcement agencies launched a large-scale operation to resolve the situation.

Numerous police units, emergency vehicles and specialized tactical teams were deployed to the area. Officials also imposed security measures around nearby government facilities, placing several municipal buildings under lockdown, including City Hall North, City Hall South, the Development Services Building and Bakersfield Police Headquarters.

As the standoff continued into the evening, negotiators succeeded in securing the release of two hostages. Police later stated that the remaining individuals inside the bank were believed to be “in good health.”

Authorities have not publicly disclosed the identity of the suspect, nor have they confirmed how many hostages remained inside during the operation.

Providing an update on the response, Sergeant Eric Celedon of the Bakersfield Police Department emphasized the scale of resources committed to the incident.

“What I can guarantee to the community right now is that every single resource is at this this site’s disposal – SWAT team, bomb squad, K9 team, gang unit, drone team. Every single asset we have to bring this to the safest conclusion is out here right now, not just ‘cause that’s what the community needs, but that’s what you guys deserve,” he said.

Officials continued negotiations with the suspect while working to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion. No further details regarding injuries or the credibility of the reported bomb threat were immediately available.
